The Awake Threat Hunter Olympics 2018

Let the Games Begin!

We’re all pretty excited about Pyeongchang 2018 over here at Awake! Unfortunately, threat hunting wasn’t included in the Olympics, despite our best efforts. Instead of us letting that get us down, we’ve decided to put together our own Threat Hunting Olympics—an Olympics-themed challenge for all of you security fanatics out there!

Much like the athletes at Pyeongchang, winning this challenge will require mental toughness, intestinal fortitude, and superior talent. Do you have what it takes to compete with security professionals on a global stage? Enter and find out!

What Are the Threat Hunter Olympics?

We’ve created five individual security challenges/puzzles – one for each Olympic ring. These challenges are built on real-world attack scenarios that we see in customer environments today. Some of these may look familiar to threats you’ve seen in your own environments, but don’t raise your hands all together.

The five challenges will be available on Feb 14 (see details below on how to sign-up). These first five challenges are independent of each other (well, about as independent as lawn bowling and equestrian anyways – wait those aren’t winter sports). But, there will be a sixth and final event, The Gold Challenge, which is only unlocked after successfully completing the first five events. The hunting games as a whole will run for two weeks—I know you are thinking you will be done in 2 hours!

How Do I Win?

The aggregate time will determine the winners of the Threat Hunter Olympics—the total time it takes a participant to solve all six challenges. The clock starts as soon as you download the puzzle package. In biathlon style, your aggregate time is determined from that time, to the time you send in your final solution. We will also be posting leaderboards as athletes complete individual challenges. Be sure to join our Slack workspace for the latest scores and discussion. Feel free to also email us if needed at threathunterolympics_AT_awakesecurity_DOT_com. We will also be on Twitter and LinkedIn if that’s what you are into!

What Do I Win – Besides Pride?

What else do you need aside from knowing you’re the best? Well, while everyone’s a winner in our book, for the three “real” winners 😉 We’ll sweeten the pot some too:

Silver: $200
Bronze: $100
Each of you three winners will also get a surprise keepsake for your desk that entitles you to a lifetime of bragging rights!

Who Can Enter?

The Awake Threat Hunter Olympics are open to all security athletes around the world – we want to know who is the best of the best.

OK, I’m In – How Do I Compete?

All that’s required is an email address, social handles and your player handle so we can send you specifics on your challenges and update the global rankings. And yes, we promise your information will not be used for marketing etc. etc. – nothing other than the contest.

You can sign up here.

What Are the Challenges?

Well, you have to sign up to get full details – but here’s a quick overview of the 5 Threat Hunter Olympic events you’ll be competing in. Please note: Each description contains a number of subtle clues, so reference them as you work on the challenges!

Event #1: Basically Amazing

One of our favorite events in the Winter Olympics is the Bonspiel. There’s nothing more exhilarating than watching delivery after delivery, hoping no one burns a rock while they hurry hard shooting for that eight-ender! I got so excited after watching a hammer slide across the sheet and stop on the button that last time I tried to rush the rink; unfortunately, they told me I was not authorized. If you find someone who is, then you’ve solved this challenge. So, strap on your curling shoes and place your slider firmly on the hack as you prepare to apply just enough weight to solve this challenge!

Event #2: Dancing on Ice

There’s a lot to get excited about at the Winter Olympics. I personally find the figure skating competitions fascinating—the extensions and other unbelievable feats of strength and control displayed while on two thin, chrome-plated blades is awe-striking.

Q: Why shouldn’t you tell jokes while ice skating?
A: Because the ice might crack up!
Q: When are pcaps like figure skating?
A: When they leave your head spinning. Good luck!

Event #3: A Sweet Sleigh Ride

Luge and Skeleton pilots are moving at over 80 mph! That’s so fast that sometimes it’s difficult to tell the difference between the two. Imagine that there was a villain that had infiltrated the Winter Olympics and was masquerading as a luge pilot. He’s up to some pretty malicious stuff, but the only chance we have to identify him is while he’s zooming down the track at ludicrous speeds. We must find out where he’s going. Luckily, he mistakenly grabbed a skeleton toboggan by accident, so he should look a bit different. But how can we tell the difference while everyone’s moving so fast? Anyway, I’ll be watching the event from my suite. Good luck with your third challenge!

Event #4: Teamwork Makes the Dream Work

Adrian and his friend Julia were really excited to go to the championship ice hockey game this year, but they ran into a bit of a snag. While they both got seats for some of the preliminary matches, only Julia was able to secure a spot at the championship. Fortunately for Adrian, Julia has a laptop with TeamViewer installed, and was able to get permission to stream the game to her friend. Adrian was really excited when he connected to Julia’s laptop just in time to view the game, but a few moments later the connection dropped. For this challenge, you’ll need to figure out Adrian’s TeamViewer ID so they can reconnect and not miss a moment of the action!

Event #5: Soohorang Looks to the Future

The Winter Olympics are a wonderful display of athletic prowess and teamwork, and nobody is prouder than Pyeongchang 2018’s mascot Soohorang! Of course, all good things must come to an end. Soohorang knows it will soon be time to pass the torch on to Beijing at a date already set in four years! Let’s take a moment to reminisce about the games and dream about what the future has in store!

Final/Gold Challenge:

Well, you’re just going to have it finish the first five to find out, won’t you? But, if you do finish all five, you’ll have the keys you need to unlock the sixth!
